This study was performed to evaluate the effect of the thermal nitriding treatment on
the surface modification of pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Thermal nitriding
treatment was made using the ammonia gas at 850¡É for 2 hours. The treated surfaces
were examined to confirm the crystal structures and thickness of nitriding layer, and
measured the Vickers hardness and solubility in 0.9% NaCl, 5%
H3PO4, and 5% HCI solution to evaluate the effect on the
changes of surface properties. ¥ä-TiN and ¥å-Ti2N crystals were exmined
in the nitrided surfaces, but the major crystalline phase was ¥ä-TiN. The thickness of
nitriding layer was about 1.3¡1.4§, and the nitriding layer was formed uniformly along
the grain boundary The surface hardness increased because of the formation of TiN
layer, and the solubility of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy in electrolyte solutions decreased,
particularly TiN layer showed the excellent protection in hydrochloric acid..
